App-phabet
For months I had Facebook, Google, Tumblr, Pandora and Wikipedia sitting in a row on my iPhone — f, g, t, P and W. Naturally I wondered if there were enough apps with single-letter icons to create a whole alphabet. Why, yes, in fact, there are.
Presenting the App-phabet, a set of twenty-six iPhone apps that all feature a single uppercase letter.

For this little exercise I made a few arbitrary rules:
- Capitals only.
- As recognizable and legible as possible — which is why Skype beat Shazam.
- No other text on the icon, such as “Lite” or “Free.” (That was an expensive decision.)
- A free app (or a paid app I already owned) would trump a new paid app. For that reason, Nimbuzz beat out the $1.99 Newsweek app. However, because of #3, Instapaper Pro beat Instapaper Free. Fortunately, I’d been meaning to upgrade for a while anyway.
- No fair using apps that let you create custom letters, such as Diamond, Write Your Name, or Illuminated Letters. I mean, really.
So enjoy! And if you know of a free app that would make a better choice than any of the ones I’ve used, let me know.
I might do a lowercase alphabet sometime to include Facebook, Google and Tumblr. Or you can. :) So any suggestions for that set are also welcome.
